The CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701) exam validates the baseline cybersecurity skills needed to assess an organization's security posture, monitor and secure environments, and respond to security incidents. Released in November 2023 to replace SY0-601, this version trimmed objectives from 35 down to 28 and refreshed roughly 20 percent of exam content to reflect current trends in zero trust, automation, IoT, OT, and cloud security, making it the current and only active version of the exam going forward.
The exam is organized around five domains: General Security Concepts (12%), Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Mitigations (22%), Security Architecture (18%), Security Operations (28%), and Security Program Management and Oversight (20%). Security Operations carries the heaviest weighting, reflecting how much of entry-level security work centers on day-to-day monitoring, incident response, and operational hardening rather than theoretical frameworks alone.
General Security Concepts covers foundational terminology and security controls, while Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Mitigations addresses attack types, threat actors, and vulnerability management. Security Architecture tests secure network and system design, and Security Program Management and Oversight covers governance, risk management, and compliance considerations that tie technical security work back to organizational policy.
Because CompTIA uses scaled, performance-based scoring with simulation-style questions alongside multiple choice, candidates benefit from applying concepts to realistic scenarios rather than memorizing definitions alone. Practice questions modeled on real-world threat, architecture, and operations scenarios are especially valuable for reinforcing how these domains connect in practice.
